Welch Records 100th Win As #15 Football Team Beats Hartwick 44-14

Mike Welch has overseen 100 Ithaca wins as head coach
ITHACA, N.Y. -- The 15th-ranked Ithaca Bombers (3-0, 1-0 Empire 8) celebrated Homecoming with a win for the 23rd time in 25 years, routing Hartwick 44-14 at Butterfield Stadium. The win was the 100th for head coach Mike Welch, who is 100-35 in 13 years at his alma mater.

Senior Jamie Donovan (Sidwell Friends/Washington, D.C.) ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns and sophomore quarterback Dan Juvan (Dobbs Ferry/Dobbs Ferry) threw for 232 yards and a pair of scores to lead the Bombers, who set an Empire 8 record with their 11th straight conference win. Hartwick extended its own Empire 8 record by losing a 15th straight conference game.
 
Donovan, who gained 103 yards in the first half (the fourth time in his career he’s reached 100 yards by halftime) scored on a 12-yard run to cap Ithaca’s opening drive and added a two-yard scoring run on the Bombers’ first drive of the second half.
 
Junior wide receiver Patrick Heenehan (Ramapo/Franklin Lakes, N.J.) caught two touchdown passes from Juvan – a 22-yard reception in the first quarter and a 19-yard catch in the second quarter.
 
Senior Kelly Gordon (Ausable Valley/Ausable Forks) was Ithaca’s leading receiver, catching three passes for 78 yards. He also scored on a career-long 82-yard punt return. Sophomore Justin Kulp (Southern Lehigh/Coopersburg, Pa.) closed Ithaca’s scoring with a two-yard run in the fourth quarter.
 
Juvan completed 14 of 19 passes for 232 yards. Senior Brett Kitenplon (Admiral Farragut/Seminole, Fla.) kicked a 32-yard field goal and converted four of five extra-point attempts.
 
Sophomore linebacker John Scanlon (Choate Rosemary Hall/Bethany, Conn.) led Ithaca’s defense with nine tackles and forced a Hawk fumble. Junior linebacker Mike Nowak (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) added eight tackles, including a career-best three tackles for loss. Junior safety Ryan Terlecki (Pennsbury/Fairless Hills, Pa.) posted eight tackles (two for loss).
